Mission and Goals

MISSION

Whereas:  Public officials, forest industry, environmental groups, and the public are concerned about the status of NEFA region forests, and their ability to provide multiple benefits, now and in the future; NEFA region states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York will collaborate together to:
Encourage sound decisions about the management and use of rural and urban forest resources in the NEFA region by: developing quality data and information about the forests of the region, identifying significant regional trends, assist the states in broadening awareness of forest health and sustainability issues, providing a regional context for state and local decisions about forest resources, and analyzing the environmental, social, and economic impacts of forest land use.

GOAL ONE:  Provide timely, credibly regional information of consistently high quality, and support applied research that will enhance the health, productivity, and sustainability of forests across the NEFA region in order to reach public officials, forest industry, environmental groups, private forest landowners, and other interested members of the public.

  • Objective One: Work toward the standardization of current data collection and analysis throughout the region and improve the quality, timeliness, and completeness of forest resource data.
  • Objective Two: Promote the development and standardization of new forest data sets throughout the region such as biodiversity, forest health, landowner attitudes and practices and wood flow.
  • Objective Three: Improve transfer of forest resource data to user groups.
  • Objective Four: Investigate the extent to which productive forest land is being changed or lost to other uses, and potential impacts in the NEFA states. Assess the effectiveness of tools to address this change and loss.
  • GOAL TWO:  Promote the retention and expansion of forest products markets in the NEFA region. GOAL THREE:   Provide a forum for the NEFA states for presentation and discussion of current resource issues and trends to reduce duplication, share experiences, attract and focus resources, and benefit from the strength of multi-state initiatives and partnerships where appropriate. Adopted 4/4/03.  Amendments adopted 9/7/06 and 12/7/07.
